Future Installments: Mortal Kombat 2

I know it’s been a while since I wrote, but I recently watched the new Mortal Kombat movie and I thought I would revive my old feature Future Installments to talk about what I would want to see in a potential sequel. Here goes.

Warning: Spoilers for Mortal Kombat(2021) to follow

The story:

The first Mortal Kombat certainly left a lot of room to continue the story and was slightly disappointing for me as it didn’t feature the titular tournament, but perhaps this can be changed with Mortal Kombat II with Shang Tsung returning with a new group of Outworld fighters for a proper tournament. Then again Shang Tsung did tell Raiden he would return with an army so a full invasion wouldn’t be unexpected and would offer the chance to bring in both the Black Dragon and Lin Kuei factions. Having Shang Tsung gather an army of Cyber Lin Kuei to invade Earthrealm would serve as a way to introduce characters like Cyrax and Sektor and up the stakes a little bit. As for Shao Kahn I don’t think he even needs to make an appearance unless its to tease his appearance in the final chapter in a trilogy.

Returning characters:

EarthRealm Fighters: Fortunately most of the Earthrealm fighters survived the events of the first movie with the exception of Kung Lao. I personally didn’t care much for the Cole Young character and feel the narrative could be switched over to focusing on Sonya or Liu Kang. I would definately like to see Scorpion make another appearance

Outworld Forces: Unfortunately most of Shang Tsung’s force were decimated by the end of Mortal Kombat, but I’m ok with that as would be cool to bring in some new blood such as Montaro, Shiva, Ermac, and Baraka. It looks like subzero will most likely be back as Noob Saibot, but I would also like to see them resurect Kano as he really stole the show for me. Perhaps he can become on of the cyber warriors and get his proper half-face mask

New Characters:

EarthRealm Fighters:

Johnny Cage: This seems like a no-brainer after they teased him pretty heavily at the end of the first movie. While he would lack the martial arts expertise to pull off the role I fill like Christ Pratt would make a great Johnny Cage personality-wise

Nightwolf: Nightwolf was teased as a former kombatant in the Mortal Kombat tournament in the first movie, but I think there is room for a descendant of the original Nightwolf to appear much like Cole, who was the descendant of Scorpion. I think a female Nightwolf would be a good change for the character

Subzero II/Frost: With Bi-han killed at the end of the first movie and most likely becoming Noob Saibot there is precedent for a new Sub-zero to arise. It would make a whole lot of sense for the new Sub-zero to be Bi-han brother like in the game, but why not one of his descendants, fighting for Earthrealm now. I could see them using the character of Frost, who was a female student of Sub-zero in the game who eventually becomes a villain and making her the next Sub-zero with a new look and a struggle with villainy

Kitana: Mileena, Kitana’s evil twin both appeared and perished in the first Mortal Kombat, but no real mention was made of the good sister aside from the appearance of her fan blades. Having Kitana in the second movie would be a good way to bring back Sisi Stringer without having to resurrect Mileena

Outworld forces:

As I previously mentioned they are pretty much starting over from scratch in terms of villains for Mortal Kombat II, with Shang Tsung essentially being the last man standing. I’m fine with that as there are plenty of evil Mortal Kombat characters to take their place from classic characters like Shiva, Montaro, Baraka, Sektor and Cyrax to newer creations like Dvorrah and Erron Black

Those are just a few thoughts I had for the Mortal Kombat II. Let me know what you think and what you would like to see in a second Mortal Kombat movie

Future Installments: Mortal Kombat 12(Warning: Spoilers for Mortal Kombat 11)

Hello everyone welcome back to my blog. After finishing the story mode for the recently released Mortal Kombat 11 I thought I would revive a recurring blog feature Future Installments to look at some ideas I have for the next installment in the Mortal Kombat franchise. Let’s get started

What I want to see:

More Characters: With just 25 characters to start out with Mortal Kombat 11 has a somewhat slim roster. Granted there will be over 30 with DLC, but  for the next game I would like to see between 30-40 to start out with. Ideally I would like to see all the characters from previous games(including DLC guest characters), but I’ll settle for at least 30 or 40.

The Return of Death Traps:  One of my favorite parts of Mortal Kombat: Deception and Armageddon was the death traps built into the levels. I think it would be fun to see them return

More Minigames: Also included in Deception and Armageddon were minigames modes such as Chess Kombat, Puzzle Kombat, and Motor Kombat which were fun in there own right and added a little extra replayablity to the games. Obviously they probably wouldn’t include all, but at least one or maybe a whole new game mode.

The Return of Fire God Liu Kang:  This is kind of a given after the end of Mortal Kombat 11 with Raiden bestowing his powers on Liu Kang and making him a god. I love the new status quo of Raiden now being mortal and Liu Kang being immortal and hope they do a good job exploring it in the next game

A Remaster of the first three games:  Maybe they could release this as a DLC or add-on for a deluxe version of the game, but I would love to be able to revisit the first three games or even just the first one.

Release Date ?: I know Mortal Kombat 11 just came out so it will be a few years before a new one comes it. If Netherealm follows the same pattern of releases alternating between Mortal Kombat and Injustice every two years then we probably won’t get a new Mortal Kombat game until 2023, but the 30th anniversary of Mortal Kombat is in 2022 so I could see them moving up the schedule to monopolize on that.

Potential Storylines

Continue with the current timeline: I’m not sure where everything exactly stands now that Liu Kang and Raiden have to rebuilt the timeline thanks to Kronika’s meddling, but perhaps we could see the story continue as is with Cetrion returning to take vengeance for her mother and brother. I also kind of want to see Onaga,  who was the villain of Deception return as a villain in the new timeline

Possible Titles: Mortal Kombat: Retaliation, Mortal Kombat 12

Return to the original timeline:  Granted the old timeline was pretty well wrapped up with most of the fighters dying before Raiden went back in time and created the new timeline, but I could see Fire God Liu Kang and Raiden teaming up to revisit the events of Armageddon and preventing the end of the world

Possible Titles: Mortal Kombat: Apokalypse

A New Generation: The last 2 games in the series have been establishing a new generation of Earth Realm fighters mostly with Cassie Cage and Jacquie Briggs, but also Takeda and Kung Jin in Mortal Kombat X. They could do a soft reboot of the series with a whole new tournament featuring the new generation and the old fighters in mentorship roles

Go Back to the Beginning: I don’t me revisit the events of the first Mortal Kombat game, I mean revisit the first Mortal Kombat tournament. I’m interested in seeing the character of the Great Kung Lao and learning a little more of his story. Of course Fire God Liu Kang and Raiden could feature into the first tournament with a little time travel.

Possible Title: Mortal Kombat Zero

Another Mortal Kombat vs. DC game:  It’s been over ten years since the original Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe has come out and now that Netherealm has continued the DC fighting tradition with Injustice I think it might be time for these franchises to cross paths again. The game could either be a crossover with the main DC universe or the Injustice one.

Possible Titles: Mortal Kombat: Injustice, Mortal Kombat vs DC II

A different crossover: This might be the least likely, but I do have a few ideas for crossovers I would like to see. Chief among them being Mortal Kombat vs. Star Wars, but I think Mortal Kombat/Street Fighter is the most likely.

Anyways those are just a few ideas I have for the continuation of the Mortal Kombat franchise. What do you think? What would you like to see in the next Mortal Kombat game?

6 Mortal Kombat Crossovers I would like to see

With the eleventh game in the Mortal Kombat franchise being released last week fans are already speculating on what guest characters will be released as DLC. We’ve had the Xenomorph, Predator, Freddy Krueger and others. The question is: Who’s next? While I could do a list of fighters I would like to see as DLC for MK 11 I thought I would do something different and list some full-blown crossovers with Mortal Kombat I would like to see. I’ll also list some guest fighters that could be featured instead.

Mortal Kombat vs Star Wars: I’ve wanted this crossover for awhile and I even wrote a post about it awhile ago, but this one is not likely to happen with Disney holding the rights to Star Wars, but still I want to see Darth Vader mix it up with the likes of Sub-zero and Scorpion

Possible Guest Fighters: Darth Vader, Darth Maul, Boba Fett, Chewbacca

Mortal Kombat vs Marvel: Another unlikely candidate, but I still think this would be fun to see.

Possible Guest Fighters: Deadpool, Punisher, Hulk, Wolverine, Spiderman

Mortal Kombat vs Street Fighter: I’m a little surprised this hasn’t happened already with both of them popular fighting franchises from the 90s still going strong. I will admit that their two styles might not mesh well, but if a middle ground could be found between the two, I think it would be fun

Possible guest characters: Ryu, Chun-li, Vega, M. Bison

Mortal Kombat vs Soul Calibur: Another fighting game series from the 90s that is still popular today I think Soul Calibur would actually work better with Mortal Kombat than Street Fighter. Mortal Kombat did briefly add weapons in Deadly Alliance and Deception so it wouldn’t be implausible for them to do it again to fight more in-line with the Soul Calibur universe

Possible Guest Characters: Ivy, Nightmare, Cervantes, Tira

Mortal Kombat vs Injustice: I guess this would probably technically still be a sequel to 2009’s Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, but I think by setting it in the Injustice Universe within the DC Multiverse would combine the two of NetherRealm’s fighting franchise. Plus, it would be interesting to see an evil tyrant Superman go against the fighters of Earthrealm

Possible Guest Fighters: Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Supergirl

Mortal Kombat vs TMNT: I don’t know how well this would work given the fact that TMNT just doesn’t have huge roster of recognizable characters. I could work as a comic miniseries though. I would probably just settle for seeing Splinter or Shredder as guest characters

Possible Guest Characters: Shredder, Splinter, Casey Jones

Bonus Games:
Mortal Kombat/Dynasty Warriors: This isn’t so much as crossover as a game set in the Mortal Kombat universe using the Dynasty Warriors formula. It would with Legend of Zelda with Hyrule Rules so I could see it maybe applying to Mortal Kombat and exploring one of the many wars fought within and between the realms of Mortal Kombat. A war between Earth realm and NetherRealm could be a good setting

Mortal Kombat Online: This is not a crossover, just a game I want to see. I think an MMORPG set within the realms of Mortal Kombat could be fun and allow us to dive deeper into the world. You can choose to join different factions such as the Lin Kuei, the Shirai Ryu, or even Special Forces. Initially I think the game would be set in either Earth Realm or Outworld with the other realms being unlocked or added as expansions later.

What do you think of my ideas? What Mortal Kombat crossovers do you want to see?
